New Years Superstition

I just came back from my farm which is 2 hrs away from Bogota, some nice hot, sunny weather where my family and I spent our New Years eve. We are not the crazy party type, like many other colombian families, we just like to sip our drinks, eat our dinner, wait til 12 and then go to bed. Is not as boring as it sounds, in between the dinner and the waiting til twelve we all gather the things that will make our new year as positive and great as it can be, a kind of superstitious ritual. I am not at all superstitious but we have been doing this stupid crap since I remember and a new years eve without it would just not be a new years eve.

So here goes the ritual...

It starts with the old man from the first picture, Jorge Baron a guy that for 40 years has been making concerts and events in small towns of Colombia. We actually don't pay much attention to him during the evening, we leave the TV on mute and turn it on just to scream the countdown with him.

Yellow underwear for happiness

Grapes, twelve, eat one with each stroke of midnight and make a wish for the next year.

Lentils in the pockets, they will bring prosperity

Tennis shoes to run around the house, and for future fast actions and thinking

Luggage to run around the exterior of the house to bring many travels

Light up an Año Viejo. The año viejo is a 'person' that simbolizes the year that passed. You make it out of old clothing, news paper and notes of the things you want to leave behind and then burn it at the stroke of midnight.

Of course it is physically impossible to do all at the same time. What we do is run around the house with our luggage gulping down grapes at a slower pace, and then run around a second time, when we have eaten our grapes, at a faster pace, and finish the round at the Año Viejo to salute the year that has passed. We look quite ridiculous as we do it but it is such fun and we enjoy it even more as we grow old.

The Christmas season and the horrid bad weather have turned Bogota in a impossible city with floods and horrid traffic jams. Yesterday wasn't an exception, traffic jam but with a touch of sun that made it worth while. While stuck in traffic my boredom switched to a narcissistic touristy mode, camera clicks and posing.

There is something amazing happening in Colombia, fashion is evolving and innovating.
The first step made by Catalina Zuluaga and Natalie Berg: Zube Pop-Up store, the first women's fashion store with 100% Colombia design. Both of them are designers and citizens of the world having lived around the globe and in the mayor fashion capitals: Paris, New York and Milan, and worked for prestigious houses such as Catherine Malandrino, Proenza Schouler and Balmain, thanks to this they have a wide vision and ambition to contribute to the growth of Colombian fashion.

Zube was born to support and cultivate Colombian designers by giving them a nomad platform that will not only move around the biggest cities of Colombia but also the cities of Latin America.
In Colombia there is a weird mentality that designer names are worn onlyby the rich people and only for special occasions, well Zube is trying to break with this stigma by mixing their 34 designers all around the store, styling and teaching the consumer how to mix and match everything for their everyday life. Everything will be ready to wear, some designers will have special edition collections, others their main ones, but all of them will be within the price range of 10.000 pesos and 2.000.000 pesos ( US$5,25 and US$1,050) this way everyone will have an excuse to buy, I will be one of those.
To spread the word, Natalie and Catalina not only seeked the normal press means but they contacted bloggers, another first in the Colombian fashion industry. So as you can see this project is full of refreshing firsts, that are happening around the world but has hit our country only until now, let's hope the industry keeps up with the pace and keep bringing us more firsts.

It will first Pop - Up in Bogota from the 17th to 24th of December at the HJCK building - Carrera 14 # 85-24 and will then migrate to Cartagena for the new year.

Last night I watched Foxes, the story of a sixteen year old Jodie Foster and friends living their lives as if they were older, building strong friendship bonds and battling with their coming-of-age drama: sex, drugs and broken homes. I loved the story, but the fashion was even more amazing! Late 70s styles with an early 80s vibe: high waisted skinny pants, big hair and glasses , backless dresses, second-skin tops, boyish shirts, and the list goes on.
Light drama for a rainy afternoon, highly recommended!

Most of the video is quite trashy but it has some glorious pieces that are icons of it's time, such a the tied to the waist yellow shirt, the huge earrings, and the striped rainbow tee, I would wear these in a heart beat.Oh! how much I love the 80s. I'll never stop loving it!

Here are some blurry iPhone images of my second halloween outfit, the inspiration: a version of the girls of Shoichi Aoki in the Fruits and Fresh fruits books. I planned and planned looks and in the end the improvised ones seemed a better choice, even the crazy masquerade man and Mr.Minnie Mouse went in a last-minute-halloween-mode and found their looks in my costume prop drawer. Thank god for that costume prop drawer, it means all that compulsive shopping I do at 1$ dollar stores, chinese make up stockists and piñata stores payed up.
I confess it's not a drawer, it's mostly every inch of my room.

So thats a wrap for Fashion Week, 30 days of marvelous clothes strut down the streets and runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris, where was I? In Colombia drooling over the computer, but thatnks for live streamming and NowFashion I felt like I was there. Here are my favorite looks of my favorite runways from the four fashion capitals.

NEW YORK

Altuzzara, black and white with Hawaii on acid all over. A very hyper way to show sportswear the mix of watery windbreakers with grungy silhouettes, a sleek chic acidity print and parachute belts made everything very desirable. Oh, and I couldn't get over that bold, black makeup brow. Proenza Schouler, their fabrics and craftsmanship have always been jaw droppers season, after season and for SS12 they did it again but this time they went wild on their prints, and I love a wild print. It was architecture mixed with an african tribal feel and a touch of the forties. Prabal Gurung screamed sex, sexy, sex to me. Oh so sexy! that purple mixed with that minty green, transparencies and those ink prints and that tainted purple lip made me go on such a high, placing this runway on the top of my New York faves. I did see a huge resemblance to Tisci's Givenchy collections, perhaps an inspiration? Last but not least Marc Jacobs, he is a genius, sending down the runway a surreal 20s girl in boxy shapes, with 'bling bling' tech fabrics, shimmery plastic flapper dresses, sweatshirts and cow boy boots. Precious.

LONDON

David Koma, three words: TRIBE ON ACID. The lazered black and white sheer fabrics over the acid pastels was such a refreshing take of the tribal trend of the season. Sleek and chic.

Christopher Bailey always seizes to surprise me with his way of reinventing the brand which once upon a time was classic. Burberry this season went in a very upbeat ethnic direction, recreating the trenches and the parkas by mixing them with innovative materials and splashing them with the most unique color palette of the season. I want that parka. The silver, swan inspired couture-ish collection of Giles was my London favorite. The theatrical tailored and sleek clothes, lazered sheer fabrics creating a feathery touch, the chaotic beautiful swan print gave everything a insane feel to the collection, and that insanity is what I want over my body!

MILAN

I am not a Gucci person but this collection made me go wild! Amazing beading and craftsmanship, impeccable tailoring, did you see those pants? Uff, j'adore. But what blew me away the most were the 20s shimmery, sheer flapper dresses, anyone wearing those with a simple leather jacket would conquer the streets. Versace on the other hand was a little monotonous for me, little mini dresses in different variations and at the end the typical Versace red carpet dresses but with sea stars attached to the boobies. What I loved here were the mermaid and sea like prints, it reminded me so much of Gianni Versace's prints in the 80s, bold, loud and kitsch but in acid pastels. Up next my favorite as always, Jil Sander. Raf Simmons sent down the runway an impeccable, futuristic, over controlled 50s housewife in pristine whites, pastel plaids, Picasso cardigans, paisley print, sheer and lazered fabrics and 60s futuristic boots. To-die-for. Dolce&Gabbana had quite a fun affair with veggies placing them on every single piece of the collection. Even if it was quite a literal aproach to Sicily and their love for food, the peperoncino and melanzane prints were quite desirable, I enjoyed mostly their veggie earrings, quite amusing. Prada threw their 50s Grease chics into pleated skirts and fast cars. As the mama of italian fashion she never disappoints. It was quite a playful collection, flames printed all over and cars on the bowling bags, boxy leather garments mixed with flowy chiffons. I personally want all the flammable shoes.

PARIS

Haider Ackermann contrasted masculine and femininity, hard and soft, construction and decontruction in a very powerful but easy way. The garments had an amazing construction and fluidity at the same time, very modern with 90s touch to me so I was in an immense awe. Dries Van Noten took last years color blocking trend to a new level, print blocking and who else could do it better but the print king himself. I wanted to tele transport my self to where ever those prints were from: tropical forest, country side or a belgian bed flower, they were absolutely amazing. Givenchy and the sexy surfer mermaids. Tisci is a genius he always makes you want so bad every single piece he creates, they give you power, sex, couture, modernity, everything that a woman today wants. His theme here mixed so many modern elements with the houses typical silhouettes. Mr.Givenchy himself must be having a party in his grave. The Lanvin girl went to hell, bad, bold, strong and sexy for this season in and all black and sleek attire. I felt like this empowered woman could beat my ass out with those shoulders, those body con silhouettes and with the eagles and chained jewels. GRRRRRR.
YSL as always was powerful, sartorial and everything YSL always is, but I couldn't pay attention to the clothes the shoes stole the show. Gold in glam footwear, yummy.

I have been such a fan of Advanced Style since their video for NOWNESS but I had not clicked on the blog for a while until this morning when a friend of mine posted on my Facebook wall the style video of Tziporah Salamon, and how much I enjoy it!
Advanced Style is a street style blog, but not the kind that photographs the girls with the 'IT' item or trend of the season, but captures women that enjoy their age, beauty and create their own trends and go around New York showing them off and living their life to it's fullest. All these women are fabulous, they have fantastic wardrobes with stories behind every piece, are very wise with a clear point of view of what they want to portray with their image and confidence, a whole load of it.

When I grow up, I want to be like them, or as as Malcah Zaeldis said I want to be ''older and bolder'' (see 4th video).

sustainable fancy seating

I bought this chair a couple of months back from my friends from DOS UNO design and have been spending all my sunny morning and afternoon vegetating in it. I wanted to post it earlier but I was having a little trouble finding the right outfit to match the bubble gum, barbie pink color of the chair, so I ended up with a collection of outfits to share.

This chair, called ST 03 , is part of the Open Tap Project of DOS UNO design, a project that involves the use of of galvanized pipings and other 100% recyclable materials for the creation of furniture. This particular chair is based on a very popular weaving used in Colombia, they have picked a wide range of bright colors to weave them adding a very modern touch.

Playing with my Lomo

I bought my first Lomo in January 2005 when I went to Madrid with some friends and met up with my sister. She took me to this lovely little shop in the heart of Madrid were they sold various kinds of knick nacks, and Lomos. Being a photographer she had already collected a couple of them and convinced me to buy one and I am so glad she did, I love the unpredictable, playfulness and rawness of these cameras. My first was an Action Sampler flash and last year my lady friends gave me a mini Diana for my birthday. I had 6 rolls accumulated on my desk and sent them finally sent them to develop, here are some results.

Last week Natalia Criado, designer of Little Lucia, and my self flew to Medellin for Colombia's fashion week Colombiamoda. Little Lucia had the wonderful opportunity to present her latest jewelery and accessories collection on the Infashion Magazine runway with two other new and young talents, Juan - Menswear, designed by the brothers Viviana and Gustavo Lozano Blanco and Alado - womenswear, designed by Andres Restrepo and Alejandro Gonzalez. Natalia had contacted me a few months back to work with her on this event, so I had the opportunity to style, create and produce the wardrobe.

We wanted to tell childhood fairy tales where princesses, soldiers, teddy bears and other animals were the main characters, so pastel colors, and soft materials became the palette of this story. Normally she is the minimal kind and i'm the maximal kind, but for this occasion we switched places, she created huge, light hearted, whimsical pieces that would stand out and tell her story on the runway and I created a minimal look that would work as a canvas to the accessories. Without outshining but complementing,down the runway came long, linear taffeta skirts in pastel candy-like colors and a modern curved, sheer, shirt,
The result was a success, we got some wonderful national and international press from Cartel Urbano, Tu Trend to WGSM and Vogue Italia!!!! And plenty more. See some backstage pics here..

Last night was movie night with the gals and Amalia, the amazing writer and know it all reccomended this amazing documentary from the late 80s about the ball culture in New York. Paris is Burning tells the story about the competition balls in the transgender community where contestants participated in different categories representing the theme of the category with the outfit, the attitude, the dance and the ''walk'', which was like vogueing! Please watch it, it is absolutely amazing and inspiring!!

The Vintage Lab is one of the many brands that are part of the emerging vintage market in Colombia, they don't only collect and sell vintage treasures, but they also like to recycle them and transform them into new ones, or as they say ' add a little Botox to something that looks old '!! They have a website and a Tumblr where they post their inspiration and products. Lately they have been peeking into the life of bloggers by interviewing them and posting style pics, and so they came across my blog and asked me to answer some questions of how the blog began, my style and tips and tricks about Bogota.

My dear friend Diana dropped something in the mail for me, this amazing cassette wallet !!!! I absolutely love recycled objects, you know, things that are about to become trash and suddenly transform in treasures. I specially enjoy the flower print fabric between the holes of the cassette, gives it a fancy touch. The brand is from Argentina, and 'Dulces Porquerias' means 'Sweet Trash' or 'Sweet useless stuff' , I would love to see more stuff from the brand.

This morning I woke up in such a good mood I decided to dress in bright colors from head to toe, pink and orange like a bright lolly! My grandmother invited me for lunch to pick some clothes for a cocktail party that she has to attend and to see her new sofa which matched perfectly with my outfit. The favorite part of today's outfit is my new glasses chain that my friend Mariana made for me for my birthday (b-day fotos to come), it is full of little details, beads with happy faces, triangle dangly thing and a little key, the kitschest thing ever, it could not be more perfect for me!

The best way to start a New York trip is with a juicy hamburger with all the toppings and all the sauces, a cold beer and fresh gossip with your vacation buddy, in my case my dear friend Valentina who flew in from Paris to meet up with me for a 10 day NY experience. Around 500 pictures were taken between Times Square, Coney Island, Williamsburg, flea markets, Midtown, Soho, Little Italy, Chinatown, Downtown, Dumbo, MoMa, The Foals concert at Terminal 5, East Side, Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty exhibit at the Met, Greenwich Village, Central Park, and other random places, so I will throw in pics little by little. so sorry for my recent absence, I have been so sick, apparently because of bad weather there is a virus going around. Anyways, before I hit bed rest, I got the chance on Sunday to walk in the sun and go again to the flea market in my new find, the denim DIKE platform tennis shoes. At the market I found a fantastic, fancy silk, 80's dress that you will see as soon as I get it back from the laundry. Oh, I also bumped into this cute little lady pup.

Last weekend was a 4-day-er, a perfect excuse to escape the city in search of some simple, bare foot, peace and quite at our family house. Unfortunately there was no tanning thanks to the lack of sun, do to the fenomeno del niño, plenty of clouds, rain and rain that doesn't seem to go away. So we spent our time reading and adventuring into the wild green gardens discovering magnificent natural textures, colors, fauna and flora. A very Discovery Channel weekend ... we all need one every once in a while.

Sunday Markets

Mariana had been insisting in introducing me to the Bogota Sunday market scene but since there had been bad weather we hadn't had the chance to go. Yesterday we were gifted with a fantastic day so we went off the the center of the city to the flea markets, there are basically two, a trashy one at the Plaza de los Periodistas at the calle 18 with carrera 2 and a fancier one called San Alejo in a parking lot at the calle 26-24 with carrera 7. The best way to go is with random clothes, no jewelery, just some money in your pocket and in my case the camera hidden under the shirt, this way you don't seem fancy, get the best bargains and avoid nasty people following you around to pick your pockets. The markets here are a mixture of real and fake vintage stuff, antiques, chic trash, interesting trash and garbage, a zoo of things people are keen to give away and sadly some don't know their real value. The funnest part is at the end of the day when people start to get so desperate to sell that they start screaming out in chorus the most outrageous low prices, that is when one has to get up and start buying. We had so much fun but got a little too excited and between the two of us got loads of crap, shopping is always fun when you are in good company but you may get a little carried away.... like we did!

A ray of sunshine

So in my last post I was complaining for the lack of sunshine and the constant horrid weather, well it was as if somebody heard my prayers because today, here in Bogota, the sun shined the whole day. To celebrate I went for a late lunch to the center of the city in the Candelaria area to the most fantastic and colorful Mexican restaurant. Sitting in the pink patio, surrounded by stripped colored table cloths, paintings of skeletons and pictures of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, we sipped margaritas and ate their hot spicy enchiladas. Afterwards, we took a stroll through the Chorro of Quevedo in order to digest all the wonderful food. The center of Bogota is definitely the most inspiring place for me, colors, graffitis, interesting street characters, colonial architecture, street greasy food, everything that reflects the Colombian culture to its fullest.

It doesn't stop raining in Bogotà and it is starting to become quite annoying, though I shouldn't complain that much and get a hang of it since it is a city where half of the year it rains. I just can't get enough, I like my rays of sunshine. Anyways, I was lucky to have found hidden away in my mothers clothes stash, a 1992 lime green parka that has kept me safe from the raindrops while I wounder around the city.

So sorry for the lack of posts, after over analyzing if to tumblr or not to tumblr, I decided to give it a go and have become obsessed with it. I know, I am an internet whore as you can see in the 'follow me' section above, facebook and blogger wasn't enough that I had to go on to sign up for accounts at twitter, weardrobe, chictopia, yotube, flikr, we heart it, I guess it's a consequence of living in the 2.0 era.
